The third issue of a new climbing journal, a superbly done annual.
This 2013 volume shares intense, personal accounts of climbs and achievements
that have shaped the sport as we now know it. Ascent presents a panorama of
experiences with prose and imagery that is as finely honed as a set of front
points. Ascent deserves a permanent place on the shelf of every serious
climber.
This issue contains articles:
Royal Robbins-writes of the first ascent of El Capitan`s North American Wall,
at the time the world`s hardest technical rock route. Includes a photo gallery
of never-before published images of this legendary climb.
Hayden Kennedy, a second generation alpinist, takes us on his wild adventure
as he blazes new ground in the Karakoram and makes a rare ascent of The Ogre.
Mark Synnott sails the South Pacific in search of unclimbed stone and meets
the direct descendants of the infamous Bounty`s mutinied crew. As he
discovers, being isolated on a spit of sand isn`t much different from the
stark reality of climbing.
Also in this issue are pieces by Alex Honnold, Niall Grimes, Dave Graham, John
Long, and a photo gallery of climbing`s Lifers by Nathan Smith.
Conceived by Allen Steck and Steve Roper — real-deal climbers, diamond tough —
Ascent was the first climbing-only magazine with literary writing and high-
quality photos. Ascent was, as Roper noted, a `far-out idea.`
