A collection of rare black-and-white photographs of the Yosemite Valley,
including intimate portraits of its big-wall pioneers during the late fifties
and early sixties.
Originally inspired by the work of Ansel Adams, Denny quickly mastered the
effects of light on rock but his special gift is for these portraits of
climbers in their element, for revealing the climber’s face in the
unselfconscious moment of obsession on a route, of pleasure in camp, of awe to
be in such a place. He conveys the culture of Camp 4 in the sixties as well as
the spirit of the big-wall climbs. Many of these photographs have never before
been published.
If you’ve ever been to Yosemite, ever plan to go, or have any interest in its
rich climbing history this superb book of classic images from Yosemite’s
golden age is an absolute must. Glen Denny was at the heart of this climbing
revolution and his stunning collections of Black-and-white photographs are
beautifully reproduced here giving a visual record of the time. The book
includes a forward by Yvon Chouinard, one of the main protagonists of the
time, and an introduction by Rick Ridgeway, of whom, Rolling Stone magazine
called ‹the real Indiana Jones›.
