Today agro-pastoral livelihoods have given way to<br \/>\na highly successful engagement in the globalised mountaineering tourism of the<br \/>\nHimalayas, organised from an urban base.<\/p>\n<p>This is a fascinating account of the change in Rolwaling Sherpa society over<br \/>\nthe past 40 years, e ectively covering three generations.<\/p>\n<p>Baumgartner\u2019s carefully chronicled life stories reveal radically di erent<br \/>\nroles and aspirations within each generation. Economic success in the second<br \/>\ngeneration has brought higher educational opportunities to the third \u2013<br \/>\nparticularly striking being how the horizons of young women of Rolwaling have<br \/>\nwidened, compared to those of their grandmothers, whose lives were firmly<br \/>\nanchored in the valley.
