Albert Steiner was one of the outstanding Swiss photographers of the 20th
\ncentury. His impressive scenic photographs have fundamentally shaped our
\nperception of Switzerland as an alpine country of timeless beauty. Like Ansel
\nAdams, he translated his artistic vision of mountains, their flora and
\nimposing natural phenomena, onto a black-and-white surface to reveal nature in
\nall its majesty.
\nSteiner’s photographic work spans the period from before War I, with its
\npictorially inspired images that look like oil paintings, to the
\nstraightforward and elegantly modern photography of the 1930s. Unlike other
\nSwiss photographers of his generation, Steiner considered himself to be an
\nartist. In contrast to many of his contemporaries, he saw photography as a
\ncompletely appropriate means of creating works of art.<\/p>\n
