\nAs late as the early eighteenth century, some maps of the Chamonix area still
\ncontained large blank spaces where the high peaks stood. Within a few decades,
\nhowever, Mont Blanc would become the focal point for the dreams of
\nphilosophers, poets and mountaineers alike. By 1776 Geneva travel writer Marc-
\nTh\u00e9odore Bourrit had declared of the peak: \u201cThe image of upheaval and chaos,
\nideas of eternity and nothingness, of revolutions and order, appear all
\ntogether at once; the imagination remains silent.\u201d John Hessler and Paula
\nWright recount scenes from the history of the highest mountain in Western
