Shisha Pangma

The alpine- style first ascent of the South- West Face of 1982.

Published in 1984 as The Shisapangma Expedition, it won the Boardman Tasker
Literary Award. With map diagramms, photo- diagramms, colour photographs. This
account sets out the key concerns of Himalayan decision-making and climbing
tactics.
The mountaineers, at the peak of their powers and experience, completed an
extremely committing enterprise. Soon afterwards two of the participants were
struck down in mountaineering accidents – Maclntyre hit by stonefall on
Annapurna’s South Face, Baxter-Jones being caught by an ice avalanche on the
Aiguille du Triolet. In addition their support climber, Nick Prescott, died in
a Chamonix hospital from an altitude-induced ailment.
