W.H.Murray was a major figure in climbing, environmental affairs and letters.
His auto-biography – The Evidence of Things Not Seen – completed shortly
before his death in 1996 has thus been eagerly awaited. In 1953, while Everest
was being conquered via the Khumbu Icefall route, Murray and John Tyson were
circumnavigating the little-known Api group in western Nepal. This was the
epitome of the lightweight trip – the antithesis of the massive expeditions
that were to dominate Himalayan activity during the succeeding twenty-five
years.
